SPPS French Immersion Pathway

[blockquote author=”” link=”” target=”_blank”]Thank you to Teresa Vibar, Principal of Ramsey Middle School, and Maureen Peltier, French teacher at St. Paul Central High School, and their colleagues for presenting information on the St. Paul Public School’s French Immersion Pathway at the December PTO meeting. It’s an impressive progression! [/blockquote]

What comes after L’Etoile du Nord for students who want to continue their French studies in the St. Paul Public Schools?

At Ramsey Middle School, French immersion students take two French immersion classes each year. One class relates to French language and literature and focuses on reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and presenting. The other is a social studies class – Minnesota studies for sixth graders and history and global studies for seventh and eighth graders. (The seventh and eighth graders have a combined social studies class.)

At St. Paul Central High School, French immersion students have the opportunity to pursue a French Immersion Certificate of Accomplishment. The French Immersion Certificate of Accomplishment is considered a highly demanding, focused study of French. The program requires 24 high school credits of French (12 semesters) of a mixture of required and elective courses, as well as service learning, a senior capstone project, four years of the National French Exam, and either the IB Language B higher level exam or the IB Language A standard level exam. A commitment to speaking French in the classroom is required.
